Octogenarian Arrested, Arraigned For Cutting Judge’s Hand With Cutlass

An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, who allegedly attacked and cut the hand of an Area Court judge in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, has been arraigned by the police.

The Adamawa State Police Command arraigned the octogenarian for attempted murder, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the command, Suleiman Nguroje.

The suspect had on August 31, 2026 used a cutlass to cut the hand of the judge identified as Hon. Dauda Hamman.

The incident occurred while the judge was presiding over a case between the suspect and one Ismail Yusuf.

Nguroje said, “On 31st August, 2026, there was mild drama at Mayo-Ine Area Court, Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, after an 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba of Korawa village, allegedly cut off the hand of the Presiding Judge, Hon. Dauda Hamman, with a cutlass.”

“The suspect attacked the presiding Judge with a cutlass and severally cut his hand, causing him grievous injuries.

“Following the incident, Dahiru Garba was immediately arrested by police operatives and the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Fufore to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yola on 4th September, 2026 for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

“Upon completion of investigation, the suspect was on Monday, 8th September, 2026, arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court I, Yola, presided over by Chief Magistrate Ismail Bello Shelleng, on a one-count charge of causing grievous hurt, contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.

“When the charge was read and interpreted to him, the defendant pleaded guilty and blamed the devil for his action, saying he deeply regretted it.”

The police spokesman noted that the court ordered that the suspect be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further hearing.

He assured the public that the matter would be diligently prosecuted to ensure justice is served.
